The Towers of Bologna are iconic symbols of the city’s history and skyline. While once there were around 180 towers, only a few remain today. The two most famous towers are the Asinelli Tower and the Garisenda Tower:
1. Asinelli Tower: Standing at approximately 97 meters (318 feet) tall, the Asinelli Tower is the tallest of the surviving towers in Bologna. Constructed in the 12th century, it offers a panoramic view of the city from the top. Climbing its wooden staircases, which total 498 steps, rewards you with breathtaking vistas of Bologna and its surroundings.
2. Garisenda Tower: Although smaller than the Asinelli Tower, the Garisenda Tower is equally famous, known for its noticeable lean. It stands at around 48 meters (157 feet) tall but was originally taller. Due to its precarious lean, it was partially dismantled in the 14th century to prevent its collapse. It’s not open to the public for climbing due to safety concerns.
These towers were constructed by prominent families as symbols of power and wealth during the medieval period. They offered defensive positions, served as lookout points, and showcased the status of the noble families who built them. The Towers of Bologna are a significant part of the city’s history and add to its unique charm.
